Pinterest & Photography

I’ve been utilizing Pinterest for years to gather ideas for photography sessions. It’s a great way to refine ideas & collaborate with my subjects. You get a good idea of the kind of vibe clients are looking for.
For example I have a client coming up soon for an adult cake smash! I've had a great time collecting ideas for poses and props! And now I can send this board to the client and get her input on what if any of these ideas work for her.

Its also a great way to get hyped for a session and come up with ideas of your own.
Take this photo from the A family photo session as a concrete example.
Having a board to share with the main client was a great way to see what she was thinking outfits wise. This helped me decide where to hold the photoshoot.
I was able to come up with a rustic setting that played well with their color pallet. it was a good way to get communication going and see what everyone was thinking.

Recently I had the pleasure of photographing the S. Family. Even though it was blazing hot the whole family were troopers and we had a great season.

Location Scouting Jester Park

Recently I went location scouting at Jester Park Natural Playscape. It’s a lovely little park with a lot of natural elements for kids & adults to explore.
Located in Jester Park in Polk County the Natural Playscape is next to the Elk & Bison Educational Plaza an educational area where you can observe elk and bison in a field. The area next to the field has a prairie feel that I think will be great for shots.
The Natural Playscape has a miniature waterfall and rocks to climb on while the Elk and Bison has a lake and prairie area to explore.
Check out the little gallery of scenes I’ve put together.
I've got some good scenes in my head for my shoot this weekend.

While I was scouting a buffalo was trying to get into a locked fence. :( Poor guy gave up at some point.

With fall and summer coming to a close now felt like the right time to celebrate the farmers market.
This is a round up of favorite farmers market photos taken this summer & fall. Most of these were taken on overcast days when the light was perfect.

Cars in Weston, Mo.

"The shoemaker's children go barefoot" is a phrase meaning that one often neglects those closest to oneself.
I'm guilty of this, I took these pictures back in June but haven't had time to edit them until now.
So without further ado I'm sharing these photos from a car show I took this summer in Weston, Mo.

Keepsake Jewelry

This week I'll be showcasing my recent keepsake jewelry product shoot.
I recently had the opportunity to do an atypical product shoot, when Shawna from Birdie and the Bear reached out to me. She was needing new photos for her website and Instagram.
Keepsake jewelry is so interesting I was really excited to photograph her work.
Shawna suggested photographing the set for the website on macarons and I loved the idea.
Some of her pieces preserve breastmilk from new moms and shells from beach trips.
Come take a look at these amazing pieces I got to work with.

The first set is for the web and the set on the weathered wood prop is for social media.

Crafting a Photography Prop

Last week I (with a lot of help from my hubby) crafted a weathered wood prop for a breastmilk jewelry photoshoot.
I used a few craft blogs for inspiration but my Dear Hubby and I ended up modifying the designs with (in my opinion) good results.

PictureThe board after its first coat of white paint.

We started with a Edge Glued Board and painted Side A with with a whitewash  (white paint diluted with water).

PictureSide B after most of the stain was removed with paper towels.

After Side A dried I flipped it over to Side B and stained it with Minwax classic gray. I used paper towels to remove a lot of the stain.

PictureSide A after it was completely weathered.

To finish Side A we sanded then stained over the whitewash. After it dried DH sanded in random patches. Lastly DH lightly painted with white paint with just the tip of the brush.

Little time lapse video of the board being stained

Time lapse of the stain being applied to the other side of the board. Also a picture of right after I was done applying stain & a picture of right after I removed some stain with paper towels. □□□ • • • #diy #diyproject #diyphotographyprops #photographyprops #photographybackdrop #diybackdrop #weatheredwood

PictureSide A of the final project including the hand hold.

To finish the prop off DH drilled a hand hold on the right side of Side A.

The final result was used to photograph keepsake jewelry by the
Birdie and the Bear.

Birdie and the Bear makes keepsake jewelry from a lot of different materials including breastmilk and flowers.
